EMA to artystka, która po sukcesach poprzednich płyt „Past Life Martyred Saints” oraz „The Future’s Void” zamknęła się w piwnicy budynku mieszkalnego w Portland w Oregonie, skazując się niejako na artystyczne wygnanie i banicje. Z dobrowolnego zesłania wróciła z nowym albumem o wdzięcznym tytule „Exile In The Outer Ring”, gdzie opisuje w nim inny świat, aniżeli tradycyjne amerykańskie suburbia – świat niedoboru, ludzi wyrzuconych z hałaśliwych centrów miast przez rosnące koszta życia i stagnację płac. Jej utwory równocześnie przejawiają się niechęcią do rosnących postaw ksenofobicznych jak i empatią wobec osób wykluczonych oraz wyrzuconych na margines społeczeństwa. W swoich tekstach świetnie oddaje duszną atmosferę współczesnej Ameryki. Stylistyka albumu wymyka się wszelkim ramom i tradycjom stylu „Americana” i choć album w dużym stopniu jest autorski to ogromny udział przy jego produkcji miał Jacob Portrait z kultowej supergrupy Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Wspólnymi siłami wyprodukowali płytę, która ukazuje szeroki zakres twórczości EMA, a także jej powrót do artystycznych korzeni muzyczki i songwriterki. Na jej najnowszym krążku pojawia się zarówno poezja śpiewana („Where the Darkness Began” jak i szerokie spektrum innych stylów, począwszy od trashu, aż po surowe, akustyczne ballady.[:en]EMA is an artist who, after the successes of past Past Martyred Saints and The Future’s Void, has been locked up in the cellar of a Portland, Oregon residential building, forcing herself to a kind of artistic banishment. After voluntary exile she came back with a new album with the grateful title „Exile In The Outer Ring”, where she describes a different world than the traditional American suburbia – the world of scarcity, the people thrown out of the noisy city centers by the rising cost of living and the stagnation of wages. At the same time, her works show aversion to growing xenophobic attitudes as well as empathy towards excluded and marginalized people. In his texts he perfectly reflects the sultry atmosphere of modern America. The album’s styling slips away all the frames and traditions of the „Americana” style, and though the album is heavily influenced by the album, it’s a huge part of its production, with Jacob Portrait of the cult supergroup Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Together they produced a CD that shows the wide range of EMA’s creativity, as well as its return to the artistic roots of music and songwriter. On her latest album there is both „Where the Darkness Began” and a wide range of other styles, from trash to raw acoustic ballads.
